Is Herbalism Cliché?

We are not saying that modern medicine is bad or that ALL doctors do not want what is best for you however.. where has herbal medicine gone?

In the not too far distant past, oh let’s say 1970’s Traditional Chinese Medicine was taking storm in Britain and Alternative Medicine was all the rave. Then in 1990’s, when famous individuals and senior political members began taunting alternative complementary medicine.

So where are we now? Has herbal medicine turned into a cash cow without boundaries or has the traditional practice of healing the body with what God has provided still exist?

Lately the art of herbal medicine has started some new trends. The herbal symposiums, herbal fairs and alternative medicine conference events all over the world are taking storm. Are we finally saying enough is enough and shouting herbal medicine from the roof tops or has this taken the place of the lavender explosion in the early 2000’s?

While we are all in for sharing the healing wealth of the plant but what happened to quiet solitude of foraging for dandelions on crisp spring morning and sharing a dandelion tea recipe with an ailing friend? Has herbal medicine lost its enchanting beauty, its charm? Or has modern medicine meet its match and now we are saying it is time for us to be included in treatment options.

Whatever the answer is, I wholeheartedly enjoy the art of planting a seed and watching it sprout and a few months later sipping a cool, refreshing iced basil and lemongrass tea knowing all the good things from the earth are supporting my health and sharing that with my family and friends. Or sending an email to my favorite herbalist for some spicey kombucha and sending her the money for the hard work that she has put into making that because she too knows the goodness that comes with a well-made kombucha.

Modern medicine has its place, herbalism is not the same as modern medicine therefore we deserve our own place. As modern medicine advances and continues to heal, we too can forge a path that is different and new but still grounded in our believe that there are things that God has provided us in the world around us. I still go the Dr and he respects my decisions for my health and that is more than I could have ever asked for.
